The Unspeaking Center

She who reconciles the ill-matched threads
of her life, and weaves them gratefully
into a single cloth –
it’s she who drives the loudmouths from the hall
and clears it for a different celebration

where the one guest is you.
In the softness of evening
it’s you she receives.

You are the partner of her loneliness,
the unspeaking center of her monologues.
With each disclosure you encompass more
and she stretches beyond what limits her,
to hold you.

The Book of Hours I, 17
Rainer Maria Rilke

Thanks to my close friend, Suzi, a fellow bibliophile whose love for Rilke inspired me to discover his poetry for myself.

A Reflected Image

The Image of God

O, Lord! that seest, from yon starry height,
Centred in one the future and the past,
Fashioned in thine own image, see how fast
The world obscures in me what once was bright!
Eternal Sun! the warmth which thou hast given,
To cheer life’s flowery April, fast decays;
Yet, in the hoary winter of my days,
Forever green shall be my trust in Heaven.
Celestial King! O let thy presence pass
Before my spirit, and an image fair
Shall meet that look of mercy from on high,
As the reflected image in a glass
Doth meet the look of him who seeks it there,
And owes its being to the gazer’s eye.

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A new year brings time for reflection on what has been, what is, what is to come and the possibilities of what could be. I find myself without any specific resolutions, but rather a desire to be that “image fair,” a reflection of the one who is perfect in love. I am grateful that as flawed as I am, through Him, I can be changed. As one who owes her “being to the gazer’s eye,” my trust in this new year is in God, who although unchanging can bring great change and hope. Happy New Year!

Welcome Little One

Welcome little one.
Welcome in.
Shed your light
on this
world of sin.

Sin so dark.
Hearts so cold.
Death stealing life
since days of old.

Bring your truth
as you
shed your light.
Light of hope
on this wintry night.

Free our hearts
with your
perfect love.
The perfect blessing
from above.

Welcome little one.
Bring your light.
Fill our hearts.
Make all things right.

Angels sing.
Hearts rejoice.
Divine baby
born at last.

Rejoice all men.
Freedom is here.
No longer captive,
no reason for fear.

For the light of hope
has come at last.
All things made right.
Redemption from the past.

Welcome little one.
Welcome in.
